Strong earthquake shakes northern Tanzania

Updated: 12:47 a.m. ET July 18, 2007

DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania - A strong earthquake shook northern Tanzania
on Tuesday, one in a series in recent days in the region, officials
said. No casualties were immediately reported.

In the northern Tanzanian town of Arusha, the building housing the
International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda was evacuated for some
time, said Danford Mpumilwa, the tribunal's spokesman.

The quake was felt more than 60 miles away in the capital of
neighboring Kenya, where high rise buildings shook as did coffee
tables and chandeliers in people's homes.

The National Earthquake Information Center of the U.S. Geological
Survey gave the quake a preliminary reading of 6.0 on the Richter
scale. Don Blakeman, an earthquake analyst with the center, said in a
telephone interview he was still analyzing the activity.

"This is the seventh earthquake that is above 4.4," since Thursday,
Blakeman said. "This last one is pretty large, I would expect some
more in the coming days, weeks, months but we cannot predict when."

How to find LPG cylinder's expiry date ?

Have U ever heard about LPG gas cylinder's expire date . I also didn't know.
How to find LPG cylinder's expiry date ?
Very important information .

Most of us do not know this. I came to know today from the gas stockiest,

because an accident occurred.
Do you know that there is an expiry date (physical life) for LPG cylinders?

Expired Cylinders are not safe for use and may cause accidents .

In this regard please be cautious at the time of accepting any LPG
cylinder from the Vendor.
Here is how we can check the expiry of LPG cylinders:
On one of three side stems of the cylinder, the expiry date is coded
alpha numerically as follows
A or B or C or D and some two digit number following

this e.g. D06.

The alphabets stand for quarters -
A for March (First Qtr),
B for June (Second Qtr),
C for Sept (Third Qtr), &
D for December (FourthQtr).
The digits stand for the year till it is valid.
Hence D06 would mean December qtr of 2006

Share this message with everyone you know, your kind
cooperation will save the life of many people and create
awareness among the public.

Effectiveness of disaster preparedness in Tajikistan

Dear Friend of    AKDN

Wednesday, June 27th 2007, a mud slide occurred in the remote village of Oqmamad, Shugnan District, Gorno-Badakhshan, Tajikistan.

A mud channel installed by FOCUS Humanitarian Assistance was able to hold the mud flow and direct it away from houses and households. There are no reported casualties.

This mud flow channel was installed in 2003 through phase 1 of a Disaster Preparedness project, funded by Disaster Preparedness European Commission Humanitarian Aid ( DIPECHO) supported by Aga Khan Foundation (United Kingdom) (AKF(UK)).

The affected community also benefited from a radio communication system (installed by FOCUS with DIPECHO support). This communication system enabled villagers to contact the Ministry of Emergency Situations within a matter of minutes of the mud flow, giving the isolated village immediate access to external assistance.

Without disaster preparedness interventions, this event could have been a serious disaster. A landslide/mud flow in the region in 2004 entirely destroyed Dasht village with 24 people killed and 521 people left homeless.

To date, the partnership between FOCUS, AKF(UK) and DIPECHO has implemented disaster preparedness interventions in over 200 isolated villages in Gorno-Badakhshan, Tajikistan. The partnership is now in its 4th phase, extending its coverage to more vulnerable mountain communities in Tajikistan. The latest phase also introduces Disaster Preparedness to communities in Badakhshan, Afghanistan through a cross-border pilot project, laying the groundwork for a full Disaster Preparedness Programme in Afghanistan expected later this year.
