Get a crash course in disaster management

Mumbai: You can now go to your nearest fire station and undergo training to be an effective first respondent during a disaster. Taking cognizance of man made and natural disasters, the BMC has initiated training workshops in a systematic manner from May 13.
The basic first respondents' training will take place on four Sundays consecutively, starting May 13 in the 33 fire stations across the city. A batch of 30 people will get to attend half-day workshops conducted by officials from the health, fire and disaster management departments. The admissions will be on a first come, first-served basis. "After the bomb blasts in July 2011, we held meetings with various departments and found that training for first respondents is essential. During crisis, Mumbaikars are inclined to help. But they don't know what exactly they need to do," said additional municipal commissioner Manisha Mhaiskar.
The workshops will concentrate on three basic modules —fire safety, first aid and artificial respiration. "In times of crisis, first respondents should know how to help without worsening the situation. For instance, it is important that victims, especially those with fractures, are handled properly," Mhaiskar said.
Based on suggestions after the four sessions, the courses will be made into a year-long programme. The BMC has also decided to conduct three-day advanced extensive certificate courses in disaster management. Currently, the BMC's disaster management cell conducts workshops only when it receives requests from housing societies.
