‘Clear Bhopal toxic waste in 6 mnths’


New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Thursday directed the Centre and the MP government to ensure the disposal, in a scientific way, of the large quantity of toxic waste lying in and around the defunct Union Carbide plant in Bhopal. 
    Terming the unattended toxic waste at the Bhopal plant as hazardous to thehealth of the people of Bhopal, a bench of Chief Justice S H Kapadia and Justices A K Patnaik and Swatanter Kumar said, "It needs to be disposed of at the earliest and in a scientific manner." 
    "We direct the Union of India and the state of Madhya Pradesh to take immediate steps for disposal of the toxic waste laying in 
and around the Union Carbide factory, Bhopal… within six months," said Justice Kumar, who authored the judgment. 
    "The disposal should be strictly in a scientific manner which 
may cause no further damage to human health and environment in Bhopal," the bench said. 
    Leak of the poisonous methyl isocyanate gas from the plant in December 1984 had resulted in 
the death of thousands and maiming of a lakh people. 
    The court said that with the passage of time, the figure of gasaffected population had risen to five lakh. 

DA case: SC notice to CBI on Jagan bail plea 
New Delhi: The SC on Thursday issued notice to the CBI on an appeal filed by Y S R Congress chief Jaganmohan Reddy challenging a HC order refusing bail to him in a disproportionate assets case. The court, however, refused to entertain Reddy's other petition challenging the grounds of his arrest. TNN

New Delhi: The Centre on Thursday moved the SC seeking a three-month extension of the August 31 deadline for auction of the cancelled 2G spectrum licences on the grounds that it will allow sufficient time to bidders to participate effectively to achieve the objective of garnering actual market price. The Supreme Court has ordered that disposal of the toxic waste should be carried out strictly in a scientific manner so as to avoid any further damage to human health and the environment of Bhopal
