Long work hours ups heart disease risk

Working more than eight hours a day raises the risk of heart ailments by 80 per cent, say researchers     The warning follows analysis of 12 studies dating back as far as 1958, involving 22,000 people from around the world. The analysis found that those who worked for more than the traditional eight hours had a 40 to 80 per cent greater chance of heart disease.      The study was conducted by scientists at the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health. Lead researcher Marianna Virtanen said the effects could be due to "prolonged exposure to stress". Other triggers could be poor eating habits and lack of exercise due to restricted leisure time. In 2009, the same team discovered that long working hours increased the risk of dementia later in life. The effect was similar in magnitude to that of smoking. Middle-aged workers putting in 55 hours or more a week, had poorer brain function than those clocking up no more than 40 hours. IANS TIRED OF WORK? U’khand cloudburst toll at 36, CM surveys area

Dehradun: Rescuers on Saturday recovered seven more bodies pushing the toll from Thursday's cloudburst to 36 in Uttarakhand's Rudraprayag district. 

    "The bodies were recovered from the debris of flattened homes in Kemara, Girijiya and Manglore villages under Ukhimat tehsil in joint 
operations by the army and local administration," said DIG (Pauri range) G N Goswami. 
    A senior IAS officer said rescue efforts are on to recover at least 32 more bodies still trapped under the debris. "The toll might rise to 60 if we are successfully able to recover the bodies from the debris," said a senior police officer. 
    Flash-floods and landslides triggered by cloudbursts on Thursday, flattened homes and washed away livestock in the district. A government source said about 400 displaced residents have been shifted to a relief camp 
    Uttarakhand CM Vijay Bahuguna, along with Pauri MP Satpal Maharaj and disaster management minister Yashpal Arya, on Saturday, conducted an aerial survey of the disaster-hit region and assessed the status of relief work.
