Government asks officials to be vigilant, create awareness in towns and villages
Alarmed by the deadly swine flu, the state government has asked the state animal husbandry department to put to use the entire machinery available with them. Veterinary doctors attached to the department and other officials have been asked to reach out to towns and villages to create public awareness, besides checking the pig population.The state machinery swung into action when reports of the deaths of over 1,200 pigs, goats and poultry recently came in from north Maharashtra, a senior Mantralaya official said.
A team was specially deputed by the state Commissioner, Animal Husbandry to visit the areas. The report of the team, that was submitted to the central and the state government says the death cases, considerably less in numbers, were not related to swine flu, but to high fever.
As a precautionary measure, Animal Husbandry minister Ravisheth Patil has directed officials to organise public awareness camps and educate people on the disease that has sent shock waves among people, a senior official said.
Besides conducting a fresh survey, the doctors and other officials attached to the department will tour remote areas, and will examine pigs suspected to have the disease. Public meetings will educate people on the disease, the official said.
'NO H1N1 VIRUS IN INDIA'
There is no infection of the H1N1 influenza virus in India, state additional chief secretary, public health, Sharvari Gokhale has said. All measures have been taken to ensure that it does not spread through foreign travellers coming to Maharashtra.
As per WHO guidelines, a separate cell has been opened in the state hospitals. For treatment, the drug Tamiflu has been made available. Personal protection equipment, N 95 masks, surgical masks have been made available by the Centre. If a contagious patient is found in the state, the medical tests will be done at the National Institute of Virus, Pune, and National Institute of Contagious Disease in Delhi.

Always wash your hands with soap and water, avoid crowded places and try to stay away from the patient
Cover the mouth with a handkerchief while coughing or sneezing
Drink lots of water, have enough sleep and nutritious food
Avoid handshakes and embracing
Don't spit in public places
Consume medicines in consultation with doctors only
If sick, avoid meeting people, rest at home
