‘Corporates have a responsibility towards the environment’

Only one year old, the Earth Care Awards have already generated a lot of interest among the environment lovers. Sangita Jindal, Chairperson, JSW Foundation, talks about what's new this year

The Earth Care Awards were a big success last year. What is going to be the USP of the awards this year?
While last year the awards were about felicitating individuals and industry representatives for their initiatives in management of natural resources and mitigation of greenhouse gases, this year the focus will be on individual and community-level initiatives in rural India.
How important a role do you think Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives play in spreading awareness about environment issues?
CSR initiatives are carried out by collaborating with NGOs and government departments. These help the organisations scale up the ladder and
    also spread awareness,
    thereby contributing
    to the cause of
    environment.
When are the Earth Care Awards 2009 taking place this year?
This year the awards will take place in Delhi on World Habitat Day. The campaign will kick-start on the World Environment Day on June 5.
Do you think these awards have helped spread awareness about environment?
Of course, they have. By recognising the efforts of people who are devising ways to mitigate the effects of pollution, the awards have helped a great deal.
