Mumbai: Just two days after the Mahim collapse, some portions of a four-storey building in Borivli developed cracks and caved in on Wednesday morning. The BMC evacuated 60 families.
Civic officials said Rajvaibhav building near M H B Colony in Borivli (West) started developing cracks around 6am and subsequently caved in. It has three five-storey wings with 20 flats each.
Residents said a portion of the 'A' Wing suddenly caved in and caused several cracks in the building. Soon after, slabs on second and third floors began to crumble. Alarmed, the residents immediately evacuated the building.
Civic officials said the building, which was constructed in 1980, housed Naval Dockyard employees.
The residents were in redevelopment talks since four years. However, the process was delayed due to legal issu es with the developer. After the court ruled in their favour, the society appoi n ted a new developer. But work was halted due to rains. "It was not in the list of dangerous buildings. The developer is making arrangements for reside n ts' accommodation. We will soon send a report," said a civic official.
